Mont St. Michel

From Combourg, we drove 28 Kilometers to see the massive walls that surround the island of Mont St. Michel. The Monk, St. Michel, constructed the castle in an effort to keep the vikings, the French and the English from invading their spiritual haven. It took many centuries to construct and the reason it was so successful in warding off enemies, was that in the evening, around 7pm, the tide rolls in and surrounds the castle. Back in those times, tide was not understood or studied. Therefore, St. Michel was successful in his plan to build the church on an island, even if it was only an island for 1/3 of the day.

Much like Dinan, there is a steep climb up the Grande Rue the top. By the time I hiked up the streets of Dinan, then carried myself, my backpack and my 1 ton camera up a million steps to the top of Mont St. Michel, my legs were uncontrollably shaking. It was like doing 3 step classes back to back, for all you die hard workout fanatics.
