La Dune Des Pyla is the largest Sand Dune in Europe, measuring 107 meters high, a mountain of wind carved sand. What began as an island in the sea slowly began to be carried by the wind onto shore and has become a monument. When you are standing on the top of this sand dune, there is the Arcachon bay on one side of you and the forest on the other. It is a very steep slope down to the sea, the same incline as an Olympic ski slope.It is extremely windy on the top of the dune, but a truly magnificent site that extends for miles. The sand dune moves 1 meter deeper into the shore PER year, covering private plots of property, approximately 20 per year.
