Everyday, as a parent, I am faced with decisions. Choices that begin with what to make for breakfast, choosing how to answer questions like "When you were a little girl, what did your Mom do to you when you were in trouble?" and most importantly, I am given, allowed, the choice in setting examples for my children. At times, and in some situations, it is hard to choose to do the "right thing". For example, if someone pulls out in front of you in traffic , causing you to spill your coffee and almost crack a rib because your seat belt locked up so tightly, you may want to yell obscenities...that is your choice. However, it is also your choice to offer a different outcome, for yourself and others around you.
We have so many choices in our lives, minute by minute, day by day. I know that in my personal experience, in my human-ness, I wish I could go back and set a different example, make a different choice in a few areas of my past. Whether with my words, my actions, my reaction, whatever. We have the ability to have a wonderful impact on those around us, or we can choose the alternative.
So, I challenge you, today, as you set forth on your way, think about what you say to someone, how you say it and how it might change their day. Give a compliment to your cashier, or your bank teller. Stop for a second and give some of your change to the person ringing the Salvation Army bell outside of the mall....My Mom used to volunteer for that job.
Perhaps once or many times in your lifetime, someone did something extraordinary to change you....maybe today is your day to give that back to another deserving human being. We have this phenomenal power to make a difference, so, why not use it?
I love this post and it is truly a DAILY prayer that I model this for my children...you can tell the days that it didn't quite work - but when I see it coming from my children too - I know there are more good days of teachable moments than bad... :)
